Halloween Safety Tips for Parents

Halloween is a magical time for your child! They get to dress up and utilize their imagination, they are excited about candy and perhaps even spending more time with friends. However it is so important to insure that your child stays safe during this fun holiday. To help you navigate this area we have created some safety tips for you, the parents; so that way your child can have a safe and happy Halloween.

Road Safety

Make sure you remind your children to always walk on sidewalks or paths. This will help them in avoiding any potential traffic. It’s also important to watch for cars that are turning or backing up. Teach your child to never run out into the street. It’s better for them to wait to cross the street with everyone to ensure that everyone stays safe. Teach your little one to look left, right and left again before they cross the street. It is better to be safe as it is dark and your little one is excited about trick or treating. Practicing road safety allows for your little one to enjoy the night and for you to feel more relaxed about the evening.

Costume Tips

Your child’s costume is important to them but their safety is more important. Another way to remain safe while trick or treating is to decorate your child’s costumes and candy bags with reflective tape. This will help them to remain visible to you and to drivers that night. If tape isn’t an option for you try out glow sticks. Glow sticks can also make the evening more fun for your child. Make sure you select the right size costume for your child, as this will make it easier for them to walk in and continue to play in after Halloween. Checking Halloween Candy

Examine your child’s candy before they eat it. Tampering with candy is uncommon, but it is better to be safe than sorry. Look at every piece of candy and if any look suspicious or unwrapped, throw out those ones. Toss any hand-wrapped cookies or fruit — unless they have come from someone you trust. Your child should wait until you've inspected their treats before eating them. If they are older explain to them why you are going through their treats before they eat them. Check for any allergy-causing ingredients. Your child is excited to have so many new treats, make sure they are safe before they start to enjoy them.
