Where Curious Parents Come to Learn

Play-based learning tips, developmental insights, toy guides, and parenting resources — written for Canadian families by the team behind Canada's educational toy store.

Why We Started The Garden

At Bright Bean, we believe that every toy should do something — teach something, build something, open something in a child's mind. The Garden is where we share the thinking behind that belief.

Every article is written with one goal: to give you, as a parent or caregiver, the knowledge and confidence to choose play experiences that genuinely matter for your child's development. No fluff, no filler — just useful, practical content grounded in early childhood development research.

Published monthly. Written by the Bright Bean team in Richmond Hill, Ontario. For Canadian families raising curious kids.

Best Toys for Your One-Month-Old!

May 2, 2025 Ara Wolesowole

The first month of your baby’s life is a beautiful blur of sleepy feeds, sweet snuggles, and the tiniest (yet mightiest) milestones. While your little one is still adjusting to life outside the womb, the right toys can help nurture their senses and gently support their early development. Here are some of our favourite toys that do just that. A Gentle Grip: Hape Rattle & Teether CollectionAt this age, your baby is just starting to explore their hands, and the Hape Rattle & Teether Collection is perfect for little fingers. These lightweight, easy-to-hold toys provide soft rattling sounds and safe textures to chew on, helping soothe sore gums and introduce basic cause and effect. You’ll likely catch them watching the rattle, listening for the sound they just made, and giving a gummy little grin in response. Tummy Time, But Make It Fun Tummy time is essential for building neck and upper body strength—but that doesn’t mean your baby will love it right away. Soft and engaging Tummy Time Mats can turn tummy time into a mini adventure. Look for mats with bold colours and simple patterns to hold their attention, and if it crinkles or jingles a little? Even better. Safe and Soothing Sleep: SafetyCraft Compact CribOkay, so technically not a toy—but hear us out. A secure and cozy sleep space is the foundation for healthy development, and the SafetyCraft Compact Crib offers a clear view and adjustable height that grows with your baby. Pair it with a simple mobile, and your little one gets visual stimulation as they drift off to dreamland. Tiny Hands, Big Curiosity: Curious Explorers Teether BookEven at one month, your baby is curious about the world. The Curious Explorers Teether Book brings gentle textures and bright images together in a baby-safe book that can go everywhere with you. It’s soft enough for teething and durable enough to handle plenty of drool—trust us on that one. Sound Sleep (and Sanity): Sleepy Sounds Baby BearSoothing sounds can work wonders when it comes to calming a fussy baby or setting the mood for sleep. The Sleepy Sounds Baby Bear offers lullabies and gentle white noise in a snuggly, baby-safe plush. It’s one of those toys you might end up wishing came in adult size. Every baby is unique, and so are the ways they engage with the world. These toys offer a gentle start—full of softness, sounds, and discovery—for the tiniest explorers just beginning their journey. And the best part? You get to be right there beside them for every little “first.”
