What's Happening at Month 10
Ten months is a time for big changes — it marks the beginning of a child's transition from baby to toddler. They'll soon be able to stand with your help and may take their first stumbling steps with support
Pattern recognition is a growing skill. Your ten-month-old can recognize patterns in familiar songs and stories, and they can anticipate what's coming next. If there's a particularly exciting part of a song, you might see them getting ready for it before it arrives.
Language is accelerating. Your baby now fully understands that words are how people communicate. They'll soon begin to imitate a few of the words you say — producing sounds that approximate real words. They also understand simple instructions and can begin to follow them.
Month 10 Development Areas
Sensory Development
Sensory Development
Sensory development from the earliest months continues to build at this stage. Your baby is becoming increasingly responsive to familiar sounds, faces, textures, and environments. Every consistent sensory experience is deepening their neural map of the world around them.
Gross Motor Skills
Gross Motor Skills
Your little one will soon be able to stand with your help, holding their hands. Although their legs may support them, they can't yet take more than a couple of stumbling steps even with support. Keep at it — they need this practice to develop the stabilizing muscles that keep their legs steady as they move.
What you can do: Hold baby upright and let them practice the stepping movement. Walk behind them with hands under their arms. Place enticing toys on low surfaces to motivate pulling to stand.
Fine Motor Skills
Fine Motor Skills
Fine motor development with intentional grasping and manipulation begins to emerge from Month 4 onward. The neural pathways for precise hand and finger control are being established right now through every object your baby touches and explores.
Balance & Coordination
Balance & Coordination
Balance and coordination milestones begin to emerge from Month 6 when sitting develops. The foundations are being built right now through tummy time, reflexive movement, and your baby's growing muscle strength.
Curiosity & Discovery
Curiosity & Discovery
Object curiosity and deliberate exploration build steadily through the first months. Your baby is taking in everything through observation right now — every face, sound, and sensation is being catalogued and processed by their rapidly developing brain.
Imagination & Creativity
Imagination & Creativity
Imaginative and creative development begins to emerge around 12–18 months. Right now, your baby is building the sensory and cognitive foundations that will support creativity later.
Thinking & Problem Solving
Thinking & Problem Solving
Your little ten-month-old will soon be recognizing patterns and anticipating what's coming next in a favourite storybook or song. If there's a particular part that always makes them excited, you might see them getting ready for it before it happens.
What you can do: Read the same books repeatedly. Sing the same songs. Pause before the exciting part and watch their anticipation. Predictability is a learning tool.
Academics
Academics
Your little one has more control over the sounds they make. They also understand fully that words are how people communicate. They'll soon begin to try out a few of the words you say — imitating patterns of sound with their voice.
What you can do: Use simple, consistent words for the most important things in their world. "More." "Up." "Dog." "Mama." "Ball." Repetition and consistency are the keys to first-word development.
Sharing & Cooperation
Sharing & Cooperation
Social sharing and cooperation emerge from Month 6 onward. Right now the most important social development is the bond forming between your baby and their primary caregivers through consistent, responsive, and loving care.
Listening & Communication
Listening & Communication
At 10 months, your little listener might be able to understand simple instructions and translate them into real-world actions. Try asking them to do a few simple things — playing with toys a certain way, or handing an object to you.
What you can do: Give one-step instructions consistently: "Give me the ball." "Wave bye-bye." "Come here." Respond to any attempt at compliance — even partial — with enthusiasm.
Self-Expression & Confidence
Self-Expression & Confidence
Self-expression begins to emerge from Month 4 onward. For now your baby's expressions are largely reflexive — but you may already notice patterns beginning to hint at their unique emerging personality.
Security & Happiness
Security & Happiness
Security and happiness are built through consistent, responsive caregiving in the early months. Every time you respond to your baby's cries, you are building the secure attachment that underpins all future emotional development.

How to Play with Your 10-Month-Old
- Pull-to-stand motivation — Place favourite toys on a low table or the couch cushion. The motivation to stand and reach is entirely intrinsic.
- Anticipation games — In their favourite song, pause just before the exciting part. Watch the anticipation build. Let the moment land. Repeat.
- Container play — In/out play remains endlessly interesting. Pots with lids, boxes with blocks.
- Book naming — "Where's the dog?" Point, pause, celebrate. "Where's the flower?" Receptive vocabulary is building at an extraordinary rate.
